Welcome to our web site!
In the aftermath of the Second World War
Hastings had the task, common to all towns in the regeneration programme, of planning for the future of both its infrastructure
and the continuing welfare of its population. A group of local business men had
the custom of gathering daily for morning coffee at the then “Creamery Restaurant” in Robertson Street where they
both voiced their criticism of the local Council decisions and let their discontent be known.
Originally suggested as a “stirrers” club, the Hastings Muffin Club emerged in 1954, so termed because
of the service performed to the then Lord Asquith in providing him with muffins which were no longer available on sale in
London streets. He became our original patron.
In 1980 it was decided to form Battle
Muffin Club alongside the Hasting Muffin Club and on the 3rd January 1980 the inaugural meeting was held at the Gateway Restaurant
Battle. Members decided they would meet regularly for dinner on the second
calendar Thursday of each month and for further enjoyment and seek an after-dinner speaker on a subject of communal interest. The objects of the club would be to support and further the work of our elected representatives
and to give financial aid to needy and charitable causes within the locality of Battle and district. The Club has since enjoyed a position of respect beside the larger organisations well known for their activities
locally as charitable agencies. We averagely give away over £3000.00 each year
as a result of thoroughly vetting such applications for help as we receive it. Members
dine on the second Thursday evening of each calendar month at The Blacksmiths Public House, Ninfield where the occasion lends
itself to an excellent social evening out. A three-course dinner (during which our Charity Muffin Bell is circulated) of very
high standard, followed by a Guest Speaker, supports the club sufficiently to enable it to meet many local charitable requests. Several social events (such as Chairman’s night) are organised to raise the
majority of our funds.
In 2009 we are please to be able to form within Battle Muffin Club, the
Battle Muffin Leisure Group. Whose aim is to organise days out to places of interest for the residents of Battle.
